UMITOMACHI: インドネシアの海と音楽

For the music session, we are taking everyone to Makassar, the port city in South Sulawesi. In South Sulawesi, the population is 1.508 million as of 2019.  It is a port city in Eastern Indonesia and is home to Dutch Colonial Fort Rotterdam which now is a museum with local exhibitions, Makassar is also known for the mix of races and tribes, Makassarese, Buginese, Mandar, Bandar, Java, and Chinese. 

今回の音楽のテーマでは、南スラウェシの港湾都市であるマカッサルをご案内します。 南スラウェシの人口は2019年時点で150万8千人です。インドネシア東部の港湾都市で、現在は地元の展示が行われている博物館がある、オランダ植民地時代のフォートロッテルダムの本拠地です。マカッサルはマカッサル、ブギス、マンダー、バンダー、ジャワ、中華系の人種と部族の混合で知られています。

Today in the city of Makassar, I would like to introduce to you a very vibrant and multilayered band which has gained the attention and interest of music enthusiasts across different regions. A band name t o d, or also known as Theory of Discoustics. 

今日はマカッサルのまちで、さまざまな地域の音楽愛好家の注目と関心を集めている非常に活気に満ちた多層なバンドを紹介します。 バンド名t o d、Theory of Discousticsです。

Theory of Discoustic (t o d)

Formed in 2010 by long-time friends in senior year of university in Makassar, t o d

have not only been blending Indonesian traditional music emphasis with electronic

beats and ambient into their arrangements but also capturing a variety of Indonesian mythology and history into the lyrics.

マカッサル大学時代の仲間と2010年に結成。todはインドネシアの伝統音楽をエレクトリックのビート・アンビエントのアレンジで強調しただけでなく、インドネシアの神話や歴史の多様性を歌詞に取り入れています。

When asked why the name is theory of discoustics, the band member mentions that discoustics is a play on words of ‘disco’, and ‘acoustics’. Showcasing the range of musicality they can be playing. When reading music reviews, many also write t o d music to be a fuse between progressive rock and folk music, to which the band member also mentions is a matter of categorization, they try to ensure that they are not necessarily categorized in one genre for example, traditional music, as they do bring traditional sounds into their work, at the same time, they ensure their music can be accepted and listened to by the general and mainstream public. 

名前がtheory of discousticsである理由を尋ねられたとき、バンドのメンバー達は、ディスコは「ディスコ」と「音響」の言葉遊びであると言いました。 彼らが演奏する音楽性の範囲を紹介すると、音楽レビューには、多くの人はプログレッシブロックとフォークミュージックの融合であるtod musicと書きますが、バンドメンバーは分類の問題であると述べています。たとえば、必ずしも1つのジャンルに分類されないようにしていて、彼らが伝統的音楽を作品に取り入れているのは、伝統音楽が彼らの音楽を通して、一般の人々メインストリームに受け入れられ、聴かれることになります。

 t o d consists of Dian Mega (vocal-synth), Fadly FM (bass-vocal), Ade (synth-vocal), Anca Kurrek (drum), Nugraha (guitar), and Reza Eném (synth-guitar) as the record producer.

T o dは、Dian Mega（ボーカル-シンセ）、Fadly FM（ベース-ボーカル）、Ade（シンセ-ボーカル）、Anca Kurrek（ドラム）、Nugraha（ギター）、RezaEném（シンセ-ギター）で構成。

These were images of one of their recording sessions which was recorded in an old cement factory in Makassar.

Alkisah (EP)

This is one of their EPs, where Alkisah, means the sharing of stories or “once upon a time..” as a way of sharing the beginnings of a story. In this EP, t o d explore the wealth of Buginese culture through their song. Referencing history or one of the oldest scripts in Sulawesi, I La GaLigo, one of the longest literature foretelling the story of the olden world which consist of the world above, the world in the middle (human world), and the world under. A truly historic piece in Sulawesi.

これは彼らのEPの1つで、Alkisahは、物語の始まりを表現する「昔々..」という意味です。 このEPでは、歌を通してブギス文化の豊かさを探っていきます。 歴史またはスラウェシで最も古い文学の1つであるILa GaLigoを反映していて、その物語は、上界・真ん中の世界（人間の世界）・下界からなる古い世界を予言する最も長い文学の1つです。真のスラウェシの歴史を表した作品です。

In their LP, La Marupè, they continue to explore the rich tradition of Sulawesi, touching on old rituals and tradition, local history, folklore and myths. La Marupè in the Bugis-Makassar language is considered as a ‘blessing’, or ‘goodluck’, it is something unseen by the senses but is highly looked upon.

LaMarupèでは、彼らはスラウェシの豊かな伝統を探求し続け、古い儀式と伝統・地元の歴史・民間伝承と神話に触れています。 ブギス・マカッサル語のラ・マルペは「祝福」または「幸運」とされており、感覚では見えないものですが、敬意のある言葉です。

Songkabala (Single)

Songkabala is a new single t o d recently introduced in 2021, planned to be included in their next album. It is a strong instrumental piece which highlights a very common ritual found in the east of Indonesia called Songkabala, a ritual to resist and be against evil deeds, chaos, or natural disaster.

Songkabalaは2021年に最近発表された新しいシングルで、次のアルバムに収録される予定です。 これは、インドネシア東部で見られる、悪行、混乱、または自然災害に抵抗し、それに対抗するための儀式であるソンカバラと呼ばれる一般的な儀式にハイライトをあてた、インストロメンタルの曲です。

Story Behind the Song

曲の背景

Because of the wealth of their lyrics and musicality, it would be fitting to share the meanings and exploration behind their music. When speaking to their band member, Reza Eném (synth-guitar) as the record producer, he mentions spending years, or even 3 years in their exploration of music material. Having worked closely with a cultural research collective, this is considered common practice for them, as there are many historical data and stories which can be explored and transformed into their music. While the research process might take a long time, the music aspect happens more naturally and progresses organically within the band members. 

Here are a few of their songs and meanings:

彼らの歌詞と音楽性の豊かさは、音楽の背後にある意味と探求を共有するにふさわしいでしょう。 彼らのバンドメンバーのRezaEném（シンセギター）とレコードプロデューサーとして話すとき、彼らの音楽素材の探求に何年も、時には3年も費やしたと述べています。 文化研究集団と緊密に協力した音楽製作、これは彼らにとっての慣習であると考えられています。なぜなら、そこには探求して音楽に変換できる多くの歴史的データや物語があるからです。 研究プロセスには長い時間がかかるかもしれませんが、音楽製作の側面はより自然に起こり、バンドメンバー内で有機的に進行します。

Tabe’

Makassar sailors visited Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia to look for sea cucumbers as a commodity that will be marketed in China. 

Tabe’ was their well-mannered greeting gesture toward the natives as permission and homage to the Yolngu, the Aboriginal. Intended to reward the Yolngu courtesy, not only did the sailors barter sea cucumbers with foodstuff (bread or rice), but they also shared knowledge about metals and the Lipa Boat. 

tabe’ is a polite word in South Sulawesi languages that means asking permission. 

Tabe’ reflects modesty which includes several aspects such as attitude, expression, and culture.

マカッサルの船員は、オーストラリアのノーザンテリトリーにあるアーネムランドを訪れ、中国で販売する商品のナマコを探していた。

Tabe ‘は、先住民であるヨルングへの許可と敬意として、先住民に対する礼儀正しい挨拶のジェスチャー。 ヨルングの礼儀に報いることを目的として、船員はナマコを食料（パンまたは米）で物々交換しただけでなく、金属とリパボートについての知識も共有した。

tabe ‘は南スラウェシ語で丁寧な言葉で、許可を求めることを意味する。

Tabe ‘とは、態度、表現、文化などのいくつかの側面を含む謙虚さ。

Arafura

Less than ten cannonades were dropped by the Dutch onto Indonesian warships in the 1960s. Indonesia’s  silent operation at the Aru Sea was caught when they tried to sneak into Papua mainland, which was still under Dutch rule.

Within a few hours, on 15th January 1962, only a few survived after struggling at the sea among Papua and Australia. Around 30 warriors were killed including Commodore Yos Sudarso, the commander. When he shouted, “Ignite the fighting spirit!” to his crew, hinting that what they were facing was not merely human but mortality. KRI Macan Tutul (Indonesian warship) and its dead warriors chose to drown and live in silence at the bottom of the Aru Sea.

Death is a necessity, if we can choose by what and how we want to die then it is a fortune. 

Arafura

1960年代に、オランダがインドネシアの軍艦に多くても10の大砲を投下した。 インドネシア・アル海での沈黙の作戦は、まだオランダの支配下にあったパプア本土に忍び込もうとした時に見つかってしまった。

1962年1月15日、パプアとオーストラリアの間の海で起きた数時間の戦いで、生存者はほんのわずかだった。 司令官のヨス・スダルソ提督を含む約30人の戦士が亡くなった。 「戦いの精神に火をつけろ！」と彼が叫んだとき、 彼の乗組員が直面しているのは生きることではなく、どう死ぬかとほのめかしていた。 KRI Macan Tutul（インドネシアの軍艦）と亡くなった兵士たちは、溺れ死んでアル海の底で静かに生き続けることを選ぶのだった。

死は必ず来る。

私たちが何をどのように死にたいかを選ぶことができれば、それは幸せだ。

Songkabala

Songkabala is one of the cultural wealth and diversity spread over South Sulawesi regions, specifically Takalar and Jeneponto. Communal work, sense of companionship tend to be an art practice and are all ever-present in every tradition or ritual that is performed. 

“t o d” tried to emphasize this anti-disaster ritual into one single that is currently relevant. “Songkabala” is presented as a mindful question: how far can modern science and traditional knowledge go hand in hand?

There is one certain wisdom, a ritual to have a conversation with nature and reinforce harmony with the unknown

Songkabalaは、南スラウェシ地域、特にタカラールとジェネポントに広がる文化的と多様性に富んだ場所の1つ。 共同作業、友好の感覚は芸術の実践にある傾向があるが、現存するすべての伝統や儀式に常に存在している。

「tod」は、この災害への祈祷儀式を、現在に関連性のある1つのシングルとしてスポットライトをあてた。 「ソンカバラ」は、現代科学と伝統的知識がどこまで密接に関連しているのか？という思慮深い質問として表現されている。

自然と会話し、未知のものとの調和を助ける儀式という、ある種の知恵。

 Performances 

t o d are recommended to be listened to live, other than the depth of their storytelling and musicality, when given a chance to watch them live, you can sense their music brings you to a hypnotic journey with t o d as it progresses.

Soundrenaline 2019

Here is their performance in 2019, in a music festival called Soundrenaline, one of the biggest music festivals which happens annually in Indonesia.

What next for t o d?

So, what is next for the band members? While the pandemic has hit every artist and musician hard with the cut down of live performances, t o d, hopes that they are able to perform live soon, including in different countries. 

In the meantime, t o d, will be producing an album for the year 2023.

A new album for 2023: sebarkisah

“sebarkisah,” is a collaborative session with a main agenda: to gather, share information, and do small scale music performances initiated and hosted by the todmusik team and the members. 

Let’s hope we can listen to the new album and see them perform all around including Japan, Philippines, and Taiwan soon!  🙂
