UMITOMACHI – Sea x Sport  | Water activities learning from Hualien Marine Conservation and Jiqi abalone farm snorkeling trip

Hualien is famous for its stunning pacific ocean view, thus making our tourist industry prosperous, especially along the seaside. For sure, we have water activities like surfing, kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, and river tracing. But, compared to the south of Taiwan, like Kenting, or islands like Penghu, the sea in Hualien is more likely to be “seen” only. 

花蓮は、素晴らしい太平洋の景色が有名で、特に海辺は観光産業で賑わっています。 サーフィン・カヤック・スキューバダイビング・シュノーケリング・沢登りなどのウォーターアクティビティがありますが、台湾南部の墾丁や鵬湖のような島々と比べると、花蓮の海は「眺める」だけの場所です。

Hualien’s sea, east coast of Taiwan, is notorious for the drowning accidents that happen every year. The most commonly mentioned is due to the deep drop near the shore and strong rip tide, which makes swimmers move far away from the shore and not be able to come back. Also, due to the strong northeast monsoon or typhoon, the waves become “killer crazy waves” (we call it “crazy dog wave” in Chinese). The waves usually swallow people fishing on the shore, or people playing with the water on the beach. News about drowning or other water-related accidents is common. 

台湾の東海岸、花蓮の海は、海難事故が毎年発生する場所として知られています。最も一般的に言及されているのは、海岸近くが深くなっているのと強い離岸流が原因で、泳いでいる人は海岸から遠く離れていき、戻ってくることができなくなります。 また、季節風や台風が強いため、波は「キラークレイジー ウェーブ」（中国語では「クレイジー ドッグ ウェーブ」）と呼ばれています。 波は、岸で釣りをしている人や、ビーチで水遊びをしている人を飲み込むこともあります。 溺れたり、その他の水難事故に関するニュースは日常的にあります。

People in Hualien, even like me, were taught to get away from the sea because it’s very dangerous. Most of the time, we were not allowed to play with the water.

Yet, when I looked into more marine-related sport activities, I happened to find out about an NPO, called Hualien Marine Conservation Association, that is promoting water activities in Hualien. They promote snorkeling or scuba diving in Qinshitan in Hualien, where I had no idea we could do snorkeling there (because it is right next to my home). So I was very curious about this NPO and luckily, I got a chance to participate in their snorkeling tour day in Jiqi. I took a short video. I will show the meaningful activities they are doing in the final part.

私も含め花蓮の人々は、海は危険だから海には近づくなと教えられてきました。ずっと、海の近くで遊ぶことは許されませんでした。

その中で、マリンスポーツを調べてみたら、NPO花蓮海洋保護協会を見つけました。彼らは花蓮の秦芝でシュノーケリングやスキューバダイビングを紹介しています。私の家のすぐ隣にある場所で、シュノーケリングができるとは思っていませんでした。 このNPOに大変興味を持ち、幸運なことに、彼らの磯崎でのシュノーケリングツアーに参加することができました。 短いビデオを撮りましたので、 最後に彼らが行っている有意義な活動を紹介します。

I will introduce four main activities they are doing now. First, it’s water safety education. As I mentioned in the background, we were not allowed to get too close to the sea due to the dangerous current and waves. But the NPO believes that accidents happen not only because of the sea, but also because of the fact that we have way too little knowledge about “water safety.” Our education on the sea is not enough. If we are trained well to know how to rescue ourselves, how to escape from the danger in the sea, we can be safe and have a chance to get closer to the sea. That’s why they teach people how to use water rescue equipment like throw bags or even tree branches or plastic bottles. The safety program is emphasized on their marine activities. 

彼らが現在行っている4つの主な活動を紹介します。 まず、水に対しての安全教育です。 先に述べたように、危険な海流と波のために海に近づきすぎることは許されませんでした。 しかし、NPOは、事故は海のせいだけではなく、「水の安全性」についての知識が少なすぎるために起こると信じています。 海での私たちの教育は十分ではありません。 自分自身を救う方法や海の危険から逃れる方法をよく知っていれば、安全に海に近づけることができます。 そのため、スローバッグや木の枝、ペットボトルなどの水の救助装置の使い方を教えています。 安全プログラムは彼らの海洋活動を通して行われています。

Second, as a scuba diving lover, the NPO gives lessons on snorkeling or scuba diving. People can get a license after the class. The NPO members always do scuba diving for underwater marine ecology observation and research. Also, they build underwater habitation for coral and squid to breed. Of course, they are doing cleaning up activities underwater too!

第二に、スキューバダイビングの愛好家として、NPOはシュノーケリングやスキューバダイビングのレッスンを行っていて、受講終了後に免許を取得できます。 NPOのメンバーは、水中の海洋生態系の観察と研究のために常にスキューバダイビングを行っています。 また、サンゴやイカが繁殖するための水中生息地を構築しています。 もちろん、水中での清掃活動も！

One interesting activity I would like to mention is that they use makino bamboo and bind them into fanlike bundles, forming them into shapes of corals to create “birth beds” for bigfin reef squid. It’s amazing. The reason why they do it is because there are fewer and fewer coral reefs, making it hard for squid to breed. They hope the ecological way of building their home will help the squid and other marine animals have a home. To join these activities, snorkeling ability is very important!

興味深いのは、台湾マダケを使い扇状に束ねて珊瑚の形にした、アオリイカの「産卵ベッド」はすごいです。 珊瑚礁がどんどん少なくなり、イカの繁殖が難しくなっているので、 イカの産卵場所を建てる生態学的な方法が、他の海洋動物の産卵場所について繋がることを期待しています。 これらの活動に参加するには、シュノーケリング能力がとても重要です！

One last activity they do is restoring corals and sea urchins in an abandoned Taiwan abalone farm. It’s the activity I joined two weeks ago. I will introduce what they do in my video clip!

彼らが行う最後の活動の1つは、使われなくなった台湾のアワビ養殖場でサンゴとウニを復元することです。こちらは2週間前に参加したアクティビティです。 彼らの活動をビデオクリップで紹介します！
