When it comes to sea and music, the best guest speaker is KJ Tien, my talented vocalist and guitarist friend based in Taipei. He creates lots of his songs inspired by the waves’ ups and downs and his love toward surfing. He is well known as a surfing singer. Although he lives in Taipei, he travels to Taitung on the east coast of Taiwan at least twice a week for surfing. He really enjoys his amazing life now. 

海と音楽では、KJ Tienが最高のゲストスピーカーです。台北を拠点に活動している才能あふれるヴォーカリスト・ギタリストであり、友人です。波の上下、サーフィンへの愛情にインスピレーションを受けた曲をたくさん作り、サーフシンガーとして有名です。台北を拠点にしていますが、東海岸の台東に1週間に2回は行きサーフィンをしています。彼は、今の素晴らしい人生を本当に楽しんでいます。

As a big fan, I have heard lots of his awesome live shows, and I was wearing his ‘surf on your body’ T-shirt today. Today, we invite him to talk about his famous surfing song – the Northeast Monsoon – and to share his experience with the sea. He really hopes that he can take Taiwan surfing culture and music to the international stage.

私もファンとして、彼の素晴らしいライブを聞きに行ったり、今日は新曲 ‘surf on your body’のT-shirtを着ています。本日は彼を招いて、彼の有名な曲- 東北季風 -について聞いていき、海のことについても聞いていきます。彼は台湾のサーフィン文化と音楽を国際的に知ってもらうようにしたいと思っています。

The single “The Northeast Monsoon” presents the winter surfing season in Taiwan. Instead of sunny and warm water surfing, ‘The Northeast Monsoon’ is more like a gloomy and windy day in the east coast of Taiwan. Surfers have to find the right spot for good waves where it can block the strong Northeast Monsoon.

 “東北季風” の曲は、台湾の冬のサーフィンシーズンについてです。日当たりの良い暖かいサーフィンではなく、「東北季風」は台湾の東海岸の曇った風の強いような日です。

It happens when KJ first time stay in Taitung,Taiwan for a month as a gap month when he start learning how to write codes, he met a friend who is an online surfing magazine editor, said ‘Since you were a professional musician before, why don’t you make some surf musics, I will probably need it when I am gonna use it in my video’. KJ said ‘Why not’ then started his brand new journey.

KJがコーディングを学び始めたギャップイヤーの時、初めて台東に1ヶ月滞在しました。そこでオンラインサーフマガジンのエティターと友達になり、「以前プロのミュージシャンだったんだから、サーフミュージックを作ったらどうだ、映像で紹介する時に必要になるから」と言われ、KJは「やるよ」と言い、彼の新しい旅が始まりました。

When the demo first was exposed on an indie music website, it got big and became a hit on the site, some senior high students also made a cover and also someone even created the sheet music for it.

デモは初めにインディーズ音楽のウェブサイトで公開され、多くの人に視聴され、サイトでヒットしました。一部の高校生もカバー曲を作り、別の人がそれの楽譜を作成しました。

After a few years KJ decided to make ‘The Northeast Monsoon’ as his first official released single, it took a long time to find a better way to present it. To look for a better rhythm session, KJ and the percussionist Vincent have tried multiple times by recording different kinds of sound from marine debris that was picked up by themselves, which includes oil cans bottle caps, wash machine conduit pipe…etc

より良い方法を見つけるのに長い時間がかかりましたが、その数年後にKJは、- 東北季風 -を彼のオフィシャルシングルとして作ることを決めました。より良いリズムセッションを探すために、KJとパーカッショニストのVincentは、オイル缶のボトルキャップ、洗濯機のパイプなど、自分たちで拾った海洋ゴミからさまざまな種類の音を録音することを何度も試みました。

After working with the recording engineer Andy Baker, for mastering, KJ decide to find one who should know how surfing music sounds like, so KJ tried to contact Jack Johnson’s record company and they found – Bernie Grundman, who ever worked with Jack Johnson, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones…etc, that make this single 100%.

レコーディングエンジニアのAndy Bakerと製作した後、マスタリングではサーフィンの音楽精通している人にお願いするべきだと思い、KJはJack Johnsonのレコードに連絡し、Jack Johnson,・Michael Jackson・Quincy Jonesなどを手がけてきたBernie Grundmanを紹介してくれて、このシングルは100%の出来になりました。

After release, this single goes to every online platform such as Spotify, Apple Music banners charts, and is still growing up!

リリース後、このシングルはSpotify、Apple Musicバナーチャートなどのすべてのオンラインプラットフォームでリリースされ、現在も伸び続けています。

About KJ

KJ Tien (Kuan | Jun Tien) is a vocalist and guitarist active in Taiwan. He is a singer/songwriter active in the surf music scene. KJ has won many music awards since he was a student and caught the attention of record companies. In 2008, KJ was selected as one of the “Super Idols” in a Taiwanese TV audition program, and officially started his career as an artist. His music includes folk, vintage rock, and R&B styles, which he expresses with an electric guitar and percussions made from litter he finds during beach cleanups.

KJ Tien (Kuan | Jun Tien) は、台湾で活躍するボーカリスト・ギタリストであり、サーフミュージックシーンのシンガーソングライター。学生時代から数々のミュージックアワードを受賞して、レコード会社にも注目されてました。2008年に、台湾のオーディション番組「スーパーアイドル」の一人に選ばれて、正式に音楽キャリアをスタートしました。彼の音楽スタイルは、フォーク・ビンテージロック・R&B、彼はエレキギターとビーチクリーンで見つけたゴミから作ったパーカッションを使用して表現しています。
