【UMITOMACHI Part.4

On January 3rd, we held the fourth event of UMITOMACHI: My Neighbour’s Port, “Sea and Holidays!” Until now, we’ve set the same topics between each of the four cities of Kesennuma, Cebu, Sulawesi, and Hualien, finding similarities and differences between each other in order to first bring our hearts closer together. But this time, we held our fourth event with the main goal of closing the physical distance between international residents of Kesennuma and others from their hometowns.

We borrowed Kurukuru Cafe Utsumi as the venue for our event, and while keeping “Holidays” in mind, we enjoyed a calligraphy lesson and a quiz on each of the cities with a more casual atmosphere than usual.

Yulia and Nur, two interns from Indonesia who came to work in Kesennuma, cooked Indonesian dishes for us.

They drizzled Indonesian chili sauce over deep-fried food made from ingredients that can be bought at a supermarket. It was spicy and incredibly delicious. Although the ingredients were Japanese, I think we could sample the flavors of Indonesian home cooking.

(We partook while keeping COVID-19 safety measures in mind.)

After that, planning to have them enjoy a Japanese-style new year, we invited calligrapher Ayami Mogi, and each of us wrote one character we liked.

I myself haven’t had many opportunities to practice calligraphy–not since junior high school!

When doing calligraphy, it takes plenty of time and concentration to paint a character that I would normally write without much thought, and so I think I was able to achieve good focus. I found it interesting that I personally am the type of person for whom emotions appear easily in my characters, so I would like to practice calligraphy more regularly.

Nur and Yulia said it was a good experience since they don’t have many chances to really focus on kanji characters.

At the end, we framed our pieces and were all done!

Everyone should definitely try centering themselves through calligraphy!

Finally, we all answered maniac-level quiz questions about modern-day Indonesia sent in from our UMITOMACHI Indonesian Guide, Dinda.

The questions, which covered a wide variety of topics from music and culture to Indonesian brands, were mainly intended for Nur and Yulia, but the Kesennuma team competed with our brains in high gear.

We all had a blast with the conversations born from the trivia questions!

Although most of our events have been held online up until now, I think we closed the feelings of distance in our hearts by keeping with our theme and enjoying ourselves in close proximity with all of our participants, including Nur and Yulia.

Also, we made new discoveries by sharing cooking, games, and customs from each city, and we perhaps created an opportunity where we want to learn even more about our partners and their hometowns.

Here at UMITOMACHI, we hope to continue holding more events like this and build face-to-face relationships in the future as well.
